Arena Square is perfectly nestled between the entrances to Wembley City’s two iconic buildings - Wembley Stadium, and Wembley Arena, and is quickly becoming a well known landmark in it’s own right, having hosted the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay, in addition to a number of celebrity and community events.

Arena Square is equivalent in size to Leicester Square and features Europe's largest interactive fountain, music and lighting display. The multi-coloured light show, at night illuminates the North, South & East facades of the Arena - accentuating architecture and entertaining visitors.

Arena Square is home to the Square of Fame, an exciting new visitor attraction. Taking its inspiration from the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, the Square features a strictly limited selection of bronze handprints of iconic and historic entertainment and sporting celebrities, in honour of their outstanding achievements.

MADONNA UNVEILS FIRST HOLLYWOOD STYLE PLAQUE AT WEMBLEY’S SQUARE OF FAME (2006)

Madonna officially opened Arena Square, with the unveiling of a bronze plaque of her handprints in August 2006. Madonna's plaque was the first of a strictly limited collection of handprints of global stars which will create a Square of Fame. The unveiling of the plaque coincided with the first of eight nights at Wembley Arena of Madonna’s Confessions Tour, which took place the venue between the 1st and 16th August 2006.

On unveiling her handprints at the Square of Fame, Madonna said: “I'm honoured to be the first performer to unveil a plaque in the Square of Fame. I look forward to seeing other artists adding their handprints alongside mine”

Nick Shattock, Deputy Chief Executive of Quintain Estates and Development PLC comments: “Wembley is a venue for legends and we wanted to create a Hollywood style feature to honour our most successful performers. Madonna is officially the greatest female star in the world and we are delighted that she is the first of what will only be a few major names, to be celebrated in the Square of Fame.  £47 million has transformed Wembley Arena and created the Square of Fame, and Madonna with 5 Grammy’s, 12 UK No 1’s and £200 million of album sales sets the standard.”

SIR CLIFF RICHARD (2006)

Cliff Richard has been performing for over 48 years and is Britain's all-time greatest hit maker with 121 hit singles to his name.

Cliff's first performance at Wembley Arena was in 1960, making him the longest running male artist at the venue - as well as having played substantially more Wembley shows than any other artist or band.

On unveiling his handprints at the Square of Fame, Cliff commented:

"Bus pass, pipe and slippers? Don't you believe it. The buzz I get from performing to a live audience is just as real and exciting as ever it was - and hopefully I've a few years left in me yet!

These concerts around the UK and Ireland are the first Arena tour I've done for years and it's fantastic to think I'll be playing in all to nearly 200,000 people."

STATUS QUO (2006)

Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt are the original members of Status Quo. Quo first played Wembley Arena in 1969 and have now performed at the venue no less than 40 times - a record matched by no other rock band!

Quo hold several other records - they have made more appearances on BBC TV's 'Top of the Pops' than any other group, hold the record for more hit singles than any other band in UK chart history, and are second only to the Rolling Stones for the number of hit albums in the British chart.

It is estimated that Quo have played over 6000 live shows to a total audience in excess of 25 million people. In doing so, the band has travelled some four million miles and spent 23 years away from home!

The Status Quo members unveiled their plaque ahead of their performance at the Wembley Arena, as they neared the close of their Just Doin' It UK tour in this, their 40th anniversary year.

Rossi and Parfitt of Quo said: “We are thrilled to be honoured in this way. We will certainly watch the development of the Square of Fame with interest and will be trying out the other hands for size next time we play the Arena!”

HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS (2007) (unveiled 2008)

Ahead of their ‘Magic as Ever Tour’ which slam dunked into Wembley Arena in May 2008, Harlem Globetrotter Advance Ambassador Eugene Edgerson unveiled a plaque in the Square of Fame in celebration of the legends’ long history with the world famous Arena.

The Harlem Globetrotters made their Wembley debut back on the 14th May 1951 playing their first shows at the Empire Pool and Sports Arena. The original Basketball ‘Dream Team’ became regular visitors over the following 30 years, being an annual fixture on the calendar throughout the 50s, 60s & 70s - right up until 1982.

The Ambassadors of Goodwill returned to the Arena in 2004 followed by shows at Wembley in 2005 and most recently in 2007 when they took on the New York Nationals on their Nothing Like It tour.

Much the same as in 1982, when the Harlem Globetrotters became the first sports team to earn a place along Hollywood's "Walk of Fame," the Globetrotters are the first sports team to be honoured in Wembley's Square of Fame.

Credited with introducing most of the world to basketball, the Harlem Globetrotters were founded 82 years ago by Abe Saperstein who grew up in the East End of London before moving to New York in the 1920s.  Since then Globetrotters have played in 118 countries on six continents, entertaining over 125 million fans and crossing barriers between cultures, societies and people from all walks of life.

Eugene Edgerson also helped in the release of 500 balloons representing the 500 wishes that this year’s nominated charity Rays of Sunshine hope to grant in 2008 with the help of the money raised by the Harlem Globetrotters.

WESTLIFE (2008)

Westlife - Wembley Arena’s all time best selling pop band – were honoured  ahead of their 26th and 27th shows at the historic venue, unveiling a plaque of their handprints in Wembley’s Square of Fame.

Westlife played their first Wembley Arena show back in 2001 and have since gone on to sell over a quarter of a million tickets at their Arena shows alone. In 2006 they surpassed pop greats Steps as Wembley Arena’s best ever selling pop band racking up their 22nd and 23rd shows before returning in 2007 and now in 2008 on their ‘Back Home’ tour.

Quintain Estates, owners of the Wembley Arena and Square of Fame, also presented Westlife with their own personalised frame of their hands in 3D, a copy of which will be placed in the Arena’s restaurant at a later date for fans to see.

On the unveiling Westlife said, "We are thrilled to be honoured in such a way, Wembley Arena has always been a special place for us and it is fantastic to be immortalised along side some of the worlds greatest musicians."
